WATERVILL project addresses one of the Mediterranean’s most urgent challenges – water scarcity in rural and mountain areas. These regions rely on outdated, inefficient and climate-vulnerable small water supply systems. As droughts intensify and infrastructure deteriorates, communities face frequent shortages, poor water quality and unreliable services, threatening public health and economic stability. WATERVILL develops innovative, sustainable solutions to modernise rural water management by combining smart technologies, nature-based strategies and community-led governance. The project aims to reduce water loss, improve distribution and increase climate resilience.

Focus

The main focus of the WATERVILL project is to address water scarcity in rural and mountainous areas of the Mediterranean by modernizing small, outdated water supply systems. It aims to develop sustainable, community-driven and technology-based solutions that improve water efficiency, reduce losses and enhance resilience to climate change. It combines smart technologies, nature-based solutions and community-led management to reduce water losses, improve distribution efficiency and strengthen resilience to climate change. Through research, pilot testing and large-scale knowledge transfer, WATERVILL aims to deliver sustainable, inclusive and climate-resilient water management models across the Mediterranean.
